Please explain the OVERLAY parameter of SORT.

After looking at this thread, I've a doubt on OVERLAY used in Sort products. Can any one expalin briefly abt the following statement, which was used in the thread:

You may want to review the 2.4.14 Reformatting Records with OVERLAY.

PS. I'm not sure which Sort product do you use, to get you a start I've linked one of DFSort manuals'. Hope that helps you.
