Three topics on catalogs this morning? That seems a bit excessive!
If you have such an interest in catalogs, I strongly urge you to contact your site support group. Catalog structures are usually very carefully considered by the systems programmers before being established, and the user catalogs are built as part of the process of laying down the system. It is rare (but not impossible) for changes to be made after the system has been moved to production. Once established, though, there is rarely a need to do much (if anything) with them.
And all of the questions you've asked are fully answered in the manuals, starting with the Access Method Services for Catalogs manual that you can reach by clicking the Manuals link at the top of the page. |

My question is that suppose my user catalog is ABC( as its a KSDS),it should have data n index part ..However when i doin 3.4 for this dataset,its showin only this name of dataset,vol ser xtents..For a Typical KSDS vsam file will show index ,data ,cluster part when u do 3.4 for that dataset..
Why its happenin ? |

Catalogs are not normal data sets and cannot be treated as such -- so doing things like looking at one from ISPF 3.4 is most likely a waste of time. An ICF catalog includes the VVDS as an integral part. You cannot expect a catalog to resemble anything else. If you really need to know the information about a particular catalog, you absolutely, categorically have no choice but talk to your site support group -- they're the ones who set it up and they're probably the only ones with the answers to your questions.
For example, catalogs are KSDS files but they do not have data and index components separated -- they are self-defining within the single file (along with the VVDS). |

An ICF catalog consists of 2 parts : the BCS (KSDS) and a VVDS (ESDS).
So to obatin info about those components you have to name them
explicitily in your listcat.
Looking at your skills (DFSMS,CATALOG mgmt,VSAM) you should have known all this. |

@Peter
I know all this that y i was gettin confused a bit as BCS is nothing but a catalog and KSDS so it should have Index n data part like any other VSAM files but it was gettin displayed IN 3.4...
Robert answered my question that "catalogs are KSDS files but they do not have data and index components separated -- they are self-defining within the single file (along with the VVDS).
" ..thnx Robert |

Displaying in 3.4 is executing DSLIST. And i dont know if that will give
all the information about catalogs.
So use LISTCAT in batch or TSO. |

Because catalogs are self-defining, do a LISTCAT pointing to the catalog itself to see all the information. The cluster name shows as 000000000000000000000000000
Code: |
//STEP01 EXEC PGM=IDCAMS,REGION=2M
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN DD *
LISTCAT ENTRY(CATALOG.username ) -
ALL CATALOG(CATALOG.username) |
