Hi

I need to know what are the limitations in migrating the VSAM datasets?
Can all VSAM datasets be migrated?

Assuming you're talking about DFSMShsm migration, then yes VSAM data sets can migrate. Since you didn't specify what you meant by "migrated" we could equally validly assume you want to know if they fly south for the winter.

What information do you want to know about the limitations? That is usually what the manuals are for -- reading and finding out yourself about the capabilities and limitations of the software. You would also need to contact your site storage management group since they define the rules about data sets (which are different for every site).

Yes, i am talking about HSM migration only. My mentor told me never try to migrate the VSAM datasets. But when i was browsing thro the system, I found some migrated VSAM datasets.

Now I m confused, any pointers where I can find about this?

Maybe you should ask your mentor the reason behind his instructions.

Migrating a VSAM cluster is absolutely no different to migrating any other type of dataset. It goes either to tape or DASD and frees up space within the primary DASD pool.

Your mentor either knows little about HSM, or there is some specific reason at your site why this statement was made. In either case, as expat stated, you need to explore the reasons with your mentor since VSAM migration (and recall) is a normal part of HSM.

Possibly because vsam datasets that are used online can cause grief when they are migrated. . .

Suggest you talk about htis in more detail with your mentor. . .
