A bridge program converts a record layout to another layout and functions as an intermediate layer or gateway between the programs and the data.

The program reads a record or data segment from a data source and reformats it in such a way that is required by the receiving program.

It is also a very useful method for fixing the Y2K problem.

Interesting, never heard the term "bridge program". How would this relate to the groups of software known as data mapping/data integration engines?
