Hi,

How to find the dataset which contains the SMF records or if there is any naming convention for those datasets?

Thanks.

D SMF is a standard command, and is well documented in the fine manual.

smf dataset names are pretty static for the IPL life,
so there is no need to query their name every time

if You are running on a multi-image system same thing

even better...
ALL the systems related datasets, Unless the setup was badly done,
should carry a token which identifies the system/zos image to which they belong
- usually the system/jes,/smf/node/plexid/<any_thing_you_like>ID
also in this case all the relevant datasets names should be easily buildable applying the naming convention

but if You explain better what You want to do we might offer better suggestions

Yes, if the setup has been done decently, ask Your support

to find out about deaths and murderers You need to have a good setup...

SMF collects data, it stores them in the smf LIVE dataset, which unfortunately tend to fill up

when a live SMF dataset is filled up, a dump is taken on a sequential dataset that gets archived according to Your organization standards

usually when somebody realizes such mishaps the relevant data might be quite old,
so You need to contact Your support to find how SMF data has been archived,
the names of the archive datasets, and all the mumbo jumbo

finding out the info You ask for might be quite time resource consuming,
You will have to process all the archived smf data ( backwards might be better) until You find what You are looking for

to have an insight of the process google for "DAF,dataset audit facility" a free tool to process smf data fromMIchael Clery

to save some of Your precious time I took the liberty of searching an posting the link on You behalf
http://home.pacbell.net/mcleary/freeware.html
sorry if I deprived You of the satisfaction of finding it Yourself
