Hi all,

Usually in the same job,we refer the GDG version created(+1) in one step by the same version (+1) in the next steps.

But in the mainframe installation currently I'm working with, seems to be different.
For example, I create one GDG version AAA.TEST(+1) in the STEP1 and if I want to refer the GDG created in STEP1in the STEP3, I need to refer as AAA.TEST(0).

Anyone please tell me, How this GDG version reference differs based on mainframe installation.

When talking about GDS it is important to use the correct terminology, as both version and generation are both valid in terms of a GDS.

It is a well known fact that only one version of a GDS may exist at any one time, however, multiple generations may exist together.

Please learn and use the correct terminology when posting, as using the wrong terms can cause confusion and possibly delay a resolution to your problem

We do not know anything about your environment, either the current one or any previous one becuase you have not told us. You do not post code and / or sysout to support your query. How can you expect a definitive answer when you tell us less than nothing.

Also, why do you think that this is a problem related to COBOL ?

Sorry i have incorrectly posted in the section 'Mainframe COBOL'.. instead of posting in "other mainframe queries"...

Actually am talking about generations....

In my job,Step 1 creates the GDG file AAA.TEST(+1).
In the second step2,if I use AAA.TEST(+1) to refer the (+1)generation created in STEP1 as follows,
AAA.TEST(+1),DISP=SHR

it ends up with the error saying STEP2 SORTIN - DISP FIELD INCOMPATIBLE WITH DSNAME ...

now is it clear??could you please clarify this?

No, it is NOT clear.

I have asked that you post your code and the output, but you have chosen not to. If you want help from the forum then you must learn to do as requested. We do not ask for things to be posted for a laugh, just to give you something extra to do, we ask for these things because they contain a lot of the information that is required to help analyse the problem,

How are we supposed to know which operating system you are using. Do you use JES2 or JES3, DFSORT, SYNCSORT or CA-SORT. This could be O/S related or it could just be bad coding practices. Unfortunately today is not psychic day, so we do need this information.

Please CLICK HERE and read the document to find out the right way to ask your questions.

It doesn't -- GDG generation processing is fixed for all z/OS systems as it is part of the operating system. If you think your site is different, then you need to contact your site support group to clarify this. However, you're going to find that you have a misunderstanding because GDG processing does not vary by site.

Robert, Crag, Dick, Expat,

I think the TS miss-interpreted the error message -
which referenced the DISP Parameter
as a problem with his gdg generation indicator.

probably the reason he has not returned is that someone at his shop
beat him around the head-and-shoulders
(a job for which we were all eagerly standing in line...)
until he saw his problem.

probably, someone else corrected his problem and he still does not understand.....

I'd take a psychic day at .....
Code:
//SORTIN   DD DSN=GDG Base(+1),DISP=(,CATLG,DELETE)
