Hi all,
I would like to know the difference between the version and generation of a GDG.
Say for example,
TEST.GB3102.SRIPAL is my GDG base, to create a new version we code like this TEST.GB3102.SRIPAL(+1) in the JCL,
which actually creates the file TEST.GB3102.SRIPAL.G0001V00
I think like we have just created a new generation of a GDG instead of a version as it is V00 whereas in file name there is G0001.
Is my understanding clear in this point ??or am i missing some thing here ?? or is this very silly ?? please clarrify
if yes , how can we create a flie like this
TEST.GB3102.SRIPAL.G0000V01 , meant to say how can i increase jus the version instead of generation ?
Have searched regarding this , but couldnt find any thing which clarifies.Kindly pass on pointers if this has been already discussed.
Please feel free to write back if am not clear.
Thanks !! |

By specifying this in the jcl. . .
At the top of the page is a link to "IBM Manuals" among which is the JCL Reference. You should bookmark that manual as you want it easily available.
And once you learn how, suggest you never do this. . . You nave no reason or need to do this. You will probably never have a business reason/need to do this. Just because a "thing" exists, does not mean it should be used. . .

In many places, yes this is forbidden for anything related to business application processing.
The link Kevin provided should have more than enough info
It is a good thing (imho) to understand this and then never implement it |

It is a good thing to be able to understand the difference between generation and version when posting problems, too. Since they both exist, you do not want to get them mixed up. |
