Hi Everyone,

Can anyone please explain me where can we find the SMF dump dataset in mainframe. I mean SMF logs the events in which name?
How do we find the SMF dataset. Is it automatically logs into dataset, if yes where is the dataset?.

First question would be - why do you want the SMF data. The chances are that some other group has processsed the data and will have readily available interpreted and formatted data which is so much easier to use than raw SMF data.

Also - Unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing, do not play with the live SMF dump datasets. Use the dumped data.

If you have a performance / capacity planning group, it is highly probable that the data will be available in an easy to use format, probably using MXG or MICS. You need to talk to these people first.

Even for a summary activity report using raw SMF data it would take a few hundred, if not thousand, hours of decoding the SMF records, and that's before you then start to use the data.

Usually the active SMF data is under a SYS1 prefix, so I doubt you would be allowed to touch those. At least I hope not.

You find the SMF data set names by contacting your site support group. The names are specific to each site and only someone at your site could possibly tell you what they are called -- whether or not you have access to them.
