PUT levels are the fixes for all products and all severity levels closed and ready for distribution in a given month (PUTyymm). There are usually so many the most customers ignore them.

The service level philosophy tries to identify the fixes with the greatest impact that IBM recommends customers apply. They have been tested to work together correctly on a sample system and can be APPLYed using a common sourceID (RSUnnnn).

See this whitepaper for a discussion.
