to add leading zeros to a modified column

Hi
I have to alter a column to increase its length, and load the modified table with leading zeros added to the older values of that column. First i need to convert VB dataset to FB dataset, and then do the reformatting. I'm usinf DFSORT.I'm getting error. Can anyone provide the syntax

the column is char (or varchar) and you are storing numbers in that column?
