No, but you could use the security product installed at the shop to restrict its use to read only. |

Kinda the reverse of something that was proposed when i was in a meeting some years ago and the overly excitable were going on and on about how very special "their" data was and people should not be reading it.
After a while of this, my good bud (who was also the project architect) suggested this particular data could be placed in a "write only" file and there would be no more concern.
Took the worry-worts 10 minutes to realize they'd been had. . . |

Thanks for the reply.
But i got some threads which tells if we use INHIBIT in an ALTER command then the data set becomes read only.
Again i found that these options can be applied to DATA and INDEX only and we cant use it on Clusters.
There exist security products for making the file as Read only. |

Tarakanta: make up your mind about what you want. Your original question was to CREATE a VSAM file read-only. This is a DEFINE statement in IDCAMS. Now you're talking about using ALTER INHIBIT to make the file read-only. ALTER cannot be used to create a file -- so either you've changed your requirement, or your original post was wrong. |

Reminds me of 2 types of memory: ROM (read only memory) and WOM (write only memory). |

From any side You look at it it' s the worst approach,
( even if the alter command provides some facilities )
what' s wrong in using a security product ? |
