Hi,
How to access a dataset which DISP=KEEP. How would we know the Volume serial no.? Can it be accessed without knowing the volume serial number.
Thanks,
Ravi |

IIRC, the volser is in the jeslog when the dataset is allocated.
If it is not cataloged, no. |

No problem - there will be no dataset reference as that is a jcl error. . .

VOLSERs are usually not referenced - everything except external tape file should be cataloged.
As Bill mentions, if you somehow are using a dataset that is not cataloged, you would need to specify the volser in the jcl. |

Did you want to say that mentioning Volume Serial no. , while using DISP=KEEP, is must? |

By default in an SMS environment, for DASD datasets DISP=KEEP is translate to DISP=CATLG.
Try to allocate a DASD with DISP=(,KEEP) and see what happens |

I used to put the dataset name in my jcl then do an ed check. If I had the wrong vol=ser the checker would tell me the correct vol=ser for the dsn in the output. Then simply apply a standard 'cutnpaste' procedure. |
