Hi,

My site is SMS managed. Lately in one other module some DSN was created on a volume which was non-SMS one.

This DSN was visible via 3.4 but was not allowed to delete by ISPF Delete (D). Below is the listacat statistics of that DSN:
Code:
  LISTCAT LVL(XXXXX.C8.EP.EP200.UNMASK.S) ALL                  00080001
IDC3014I CATALOG ERROR
IDC3009I ** VSAM CATALOG RETURN CODE IS 50- REASON CODE IS IGG0CLE0-6
IDC1566I ** XXXXX.C8.EP.EP200.UNMASK.S NOT LISTED
IDC3012I ENTRY XXXXX.C8.EP.EP200.UNMASK.S NOT FOUND
IDC3007I ** VSAM CATALOG RETURN-CODE IS 8
IDC1566I ** XXXXX.C8.EP.EP200.UNMASK.S NOT LISTED
IDCAMS  SYSTEM SERVICES                                           TIME: 04:56:22
THE NUMBER OF ENTRIES PROCESSED WAS:
                   AIX -------------------0
                   ALIAS -----------------0
                   CLUSTER ---------------0
                   DATA ------------------0
                   GDG -------------------0
                   INDEX -----------------0
                   NONVSAM ---------------0
                   PAGESPACE -------------0
                   PATH ------------------0
                   SPACE -----------------0
                   USERCATALOG -----------0
                   TAPELIBRARY -----------0
                   TAPEVOLUME ------------0
                   TOTAL -----------------0
THE NUMBER OF PROTECTED ENTRIES SUPPRESSED WAS 0
IDC0001I FUNCTION COMPLETED, HIGHEST CONDITION CODE WAS 4

IDC0002I IDCAMS PROCESSING COMPLETE. MAXIMUM CONDITION CODE WAS 4

I was asked to delete this DSN - I could do it using IEFBR14 but my concern is : Do we still keep some non-SMS managed volumes at an SMS shop? If yes, why, what's the use of such volumes?

Usually the systems volumes are non SMS managed.

Sometimes cross system volumes are the same. It is just another one of those things that is site specific.

Was your dataset above by chance cataloged in the master catalog

Thanks Expat.

I did not notice about the Master catalog & deleted it in that impulse of moment and now it's deleted. . . icon_neutral.gif

One thing I notice is that this DSN had something to do with "Bank-data", so may be they (system guys) wanted no one to delete that DSN - but it was a test run & file was encrypted anyways, but as it was not allowed to delete they were getting JCL error in next test run that this DSN is already cataloged (may be in master one) . . .

Now next query is - do we have this capability in jcl that we can route some DSN to non-sms volumes. I believe unless VOL=SER in not coded we can not... I'll check this with them if this is the case, but inspite of this, is there any such facility we are availble with? Please assist.

PS. Some times I feel very small things make me back to the square... as if I've just started with Mainframes. . . icon_neutral.gif

Anuj, the ACS routines at your site probably control whether a particular data set is SMS or non-SMS; in some cases if the data set is not to be SMS managed a volume can be set without VOL=SER in the JCL (although I haven't had a chance to check the manual on that).

I deal with SMS and non-SMS data sets all the time; most of the time if the ACS routines are well thought out there's not much of an issue. Of course this last week was one of the times it was an issue ... security rules denied me authority to read a production SMS data set, but the production user id doesn't have authority to build non-SMS data sets ... so I had to think about how to do the testing I needed to. But MOST of the time the ACS routines work well and everything gets handled as needed.
