i don't think you can put a hold on a job in ready/active queue . I think the requirement is that while the job is in ready/active queue one realises that there is something wrong in the job and needs to rectify it before execution .
It can be done in roundabout way also . When the job comes in spool , cancel it , if you have access to it. The subsequent jobs will also come on hold as requirement for this job will not be met. Correct the job and demand it again with the same schedule id . If however the job is a small one you will have no time to cancel it in spool . So the best option is to immediately put a hold in the subsequent job/jobs in CA7 . Once the job runs , the batch will come on hold for subsequent jobs . Correct and demand the job ( be careful with GDG generations on resubmission ) . Once the job runs fine release hold on subsequent jobs.

Actually the job was needed one more file file from another job and we came to know when the job was running. So we cancelled it and restored the updated datasets and then ran the job again after we got the file.

We heard that we do not need to do that. Instead we could put a hold on running job then we can release the job once we got the required file.

The command they told was 'quiese'.

But i dont know how to use it and where to use it. Can someone explain this command?

If you are an application engineer, I believe, you can not issue such commands (though I don't know what it does) instead the support people can issue when requested. Getting in contact with them about the usage of this command might be of some use . . .
