Hi all,

I need a suggestion. I have a file with record length 17500 and this file is populated into a Array (in a cobol program). Can anyone suggest me what is the maximum no of records in the input file that could be accomodated inside this COBOL internal table?

I searched through our forum and found the below:
No of records possible to be populated into such Cobol table = 16,777,215 / 17500 = 957.99 (approx. 1000)

Is this right... icon_question.gif

Please suggest...

It depends on the COBOL compiler version. Enterprise COBOL 3.4 allows 7669 table entries (134,217,727 bytes maximum).

Is this 7669 entries for the cobol 3.4 complier independent of the Record length in the file?

I mean the file that i am using has a records lenght of 17500.. will this have any impact on the size of the array?

Thanks ...!

Hello,

At the top of the page is a link to "IBM Manuals". There are manuals for recent versions of mainframe compilers. Select the "Language Reference" for your version and search that manual for "Compiler Limits". All of the limits are listed in that section of the manual.

If you find something that is not clear to you, post what you found and your question. Someone will be able to clarify.

The 134,217,727 limit is independent of any file -- it is a table limit in working storage. Limits on files are different and can also be found in Appendix B of the COBOL Language Reference (manuals link at the top of the page).
