Hello and welcome to the forum,
SMPE (System Modificaton Program Extended) is how the majority of mainframe software is installed, upgraded, and repaired (ptf's).
Look here for more info - smp is too large to try to deal with as a forum topic.

www.s390.ibm.com
Operating systems (on left)
z/os
Library (on left)
Pick the appropriate version
enter smp/e as the search argument in the elements and features search box -- the SMP/E manuals for the version will show up
The manuals on SMP/E cover hundreds and hundreds of pages of setup, commands, errors, and so forth -- far too much to explain in a forum. You need to plan on reading a couple of thousand pages of manuals to get the full details of what you're asking. |

And if you're going to be trying the SMP/E commands, make sure you've got a fully backed up sandbox LPAR before starting. Messing up SMP/E commands (such as bypassing a HOLD(ACTION) inadvertently) is the best way I know to create a completely unusable LPAR. Sometimes a stand alone restore is your best option. |
