Hi,

I have a VBS file with MVS SMF records. I would like to copy it to a VB or FB file for later processing by REXX. Is it possible to use DFSORT for this VBS to VB/FB copy?

I know DFSORT can copy VBS to VBS but can't find any information on VBS to VB/FB.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

You do realize that the "S" in VBS implies that the record will NOT fit in the MAX VB record size?
Without manipulation, you will not be able to standardize a simple solution for your needs...

Hi,

How about checking the follow up posts from this thread: http://www.ibmmainframes.com/viewtopic.php?t=33555&highlight=vbs

A bad idea for so many reasons. Try extracting only the records you need using the SMF utility; depending on which record type(s) you're talking about the conversion may be easier. On the other hand, conversion of SMF data to FB is rarely a good idea because the potential record lengths are so long. Don't you have an existing tool like MXG (or even SAS) to hit the SMF data directly?

I have in the past where SAS was not available, extracted fields from SMF records and created FB files for REXX processing.

But they were only simple extracts, and even that was a bit of a pain in the ........

What information do you want, as it may be available in an easier to get at form.

It depends on the actual length of the records in the VBS file. A VBS file has a maximum LRECL of 32767 whereas a VB file has a maximum LRECL of 32756 bytes. If the longest record in your VBS file is 32756 bytes or less, than you can copy the VBS file to a VB file with the following DFSORT job:

Code:

//S1    EXEC  PGM=ICEMAN
//SYSOUT    DD  SYSOUT=*
//SORTIN DD DSN=...  input file (VBS)
//SORTOUT DD DSN=VB_output,DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE),
// SPACE=(CYL,(5,5)),UNIT=SYSDA,RECFM=VB,LRECL=32756
//SYSIN    DD    *
  OPTION COPY
/*

If the VBS file has records greater than 32756 bytes, then you'd either have to remove or truncate those records to have them fit in a VB file with the maximum LRECL of 32756.

Hello,

There may not be enough dasd on the system to support copying the full smf data to FB. . . There is no business reason to waste dasd (or tape) that way.

As others mentioned, you should only do this for needed records.

If you post what you are really trying to do (other than make the smf data file easier for you to read), someone may have a suggestion about a way to get the info you want.

Thanks guys for the replies and Frank for the JCL.

We do have SAS/MXG. Although my skill in SAS is limited I still use it to some extent and we have batch jobs that process SMF data using MXG and load to tables.

The reason I wanted to make it REXX usable was to just see if its possible and try it out. Nothing more. I have some free time to pass I guess.

I mainly wanted to process the DB2 records with id 100, 101, 102. But will try out others such as RACF etc now that I can get it to VB.

And Frank, that JCL worked. Thanks!
