HSM is trying to recycle one volume and failing with the following error message
'ARC0833I RECYCLE ENDED ON VOLUME I30357, 0000000 DATAARC0833I (CONT.) SETS MOVED, TIME 17:23:46, RC=0017, REAS=00000000'
I have tried running audit mediacontrols also on this volumes(it has been suggested in this forum). but that also has failed with following errors.
/* MSG 916 - I/O ERROR ON VOLUME I30357
/* MSG 998 - AUDIT CONTINUING, COMMAND ACTIVITY LOG MAY CONTAIN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- END OF - ENHANCED AUDIT - LISTING - |

Suggest you talk with your storage management people to determine if there is a problem with the tape or with the tape drive. Is the i/o error persistent when the tape is mounted on different tape drives or are the failuers all on the same drive? |

Also, if I remember correctly, this type of message is issued when a tape has been overwritten and is no longer a valid HSM tape.
Check out the TMS listing to ensure that it is in fact a HSM tape. and not another dataset name. |

Tape in consideration here is a virtual tape. I have done audit for this in ISMF, it was OK and i have checked it in ATL also. there also it seems tio be fine.
This is infact a HSM tape and i have done ttoc lising on this
it display following information
VOL=I30357 DEVTYP=3490 MIGTYP=L2-TP VOL FULL=Y VOL EMPTY=N DELDS=0000
SP-MGT-DATE=00/00/00 PSWD=N EXP=Y RACF=N AVAIL=Y IN USE=-NO- SELD=N
IDRC=Y DUPLEX ALT=*NONE* PCT FULL=****
ARC0140I LIST COMPLETED, 3 LINE(S) OF DATA OUTPUT |

message given in earlier post was result of command
LIST TTOC VOLUME(I30357).
I have submitted another command
LIST TTOC(I30357) and output is
VOLSER=I30357 UNITNAME=3490 VOL TYPE= ML2 CAPACITY=00123600 RACF= NO
VALID BLKS=00000000 PCT VALID= 000 VOL STATUS= FULL PREV VOL=*NONE*
SUCC VOL=*NONE* NUM REC=001 ONE FILE=*** ALTVOL=*NONE*
LIBRARY=PTPVTS2 STORAGE GROUP=PTPVTS2
ARC0140I LIST COMPLETED, 4 LINE(S) OF DATA OUTPUT
I have tried to expire this volume using TMS but it seems that it is under HSM control so cannot be expired from TMS |

No, you will need to use DELVOL to release it from HSM and then the TMS will scratch it after HSM has released it. |

I have tried these following commands
DELVOL I30357 MIGRATION
DELVOL I30357 MIGRATION(PURGE)
Output of the first command is
ARC0260I MIGRATION VOLUME I30357 ENTRY UNASSIGNED
Then I tried to submit second command with PURGE
Outout of that is
ARC0260I MIGRATION VOLUME I30357 ENTRY NOT DELETED - VALID DATA MAY EXIST ON
ARC0260I (CONT.) VOLUME
It seems to me that there is no valid data exist on the volume. but still i am not able to free this volume from HSM |

I have tried command given in the manual as well
result in HSM log is followed
ARC0522I SPACE MANAGEMENT STARTING ON VOLUME I30357 AT 12:33:41 ON 2009/01/07,
ARC0523I SPACE MANAGEMENT ENDED ON VOLUME I30357, 000000 DATA SET(S) MIGRATED/
MINAGE 00000, TIME 12:33:41
DFSMSHSM MIGRATION LOG, TIME 12:33:41, DATE 09/01/07
DFSMSHSM BACKUP LOG, TIME 17:32:28, DATE 09/01/06
DFSMSHSM MIGRATION LOG, TIME 12:33:41, DATE 09/01/07
it seems noting has been migrated and moved.
then I tried to submit DELVOL with Purge again, It is giving the same error message, it was giving earlier |

I vaguely recall from the dark and distant past that you needed to perform a DELVOL MARKFULL before the DELVOL PURGE.
You have nothing to lose by trying it. |

I've had a skip back to find out what I have done in similar situations. Probably about 8-10 years ago was when I last came across this type of problem.
From my notes.......
It appears that HSM believes that there is valid data on this volume.
If you can get an MCDS list for that volume then it makes lifes easier, but if not......................
Try this
HLIST MCDS DATASETNAME SELECT(ML2) DSI ODS='uid.LIST.ML2DATA'
Unload a working copy of the MCDS using IDCAMS REPRO.
You probably can't do this if your site uses RLS between a HSMPLEX HSM subsystems. If not, use a restore version from the MCDS created at the start of the automatic backup cycle or you can also create a current version using the BACKVOL CDS command, and use this to restore to a KSDS that you will be able to unload.
Using the unloaded MCDS write a SAS or SORT program to scan pos 65 (SAS) or pos 69 (SORT) to find the volser that is giving grief. Extract the dataset name (SAS - pos 1, SORT pos 5).
If there are any records then FIXCDS to delete them and retry the DELVOL PURGE.
If that doesn't work, and you are happy that no records exist on the tape I suggest that you use FIXCDS to delete the migration volume record for the tape, and also the TTOC entry. I can not recall the record types for these records as they are contained in the HSM diagnostics reference manual which is not readily available online, but I do have a copy on my laptop at home. |

Thanks,
I checked in backup of MCDS and found the dataset name on the failed volume. recalled the dataset and then did a recyle. It went fine. |
