I am trying to recycle some old tapes using HSM. All these tapes contains HSM backup or HSM migrated datasets.
There are many tapes which are failing for recycle. error message that are coming is also different
Here are some examples
HSM RECYCLE FAILED ON IBM3. PLEASE INVESTIGATE
****************************************************
ARC0833I RECYCLE ENDED ON VOLUME 706508, 0000019 DATAARC0833I (CONT.) SETS MOVED, TIME 08:29:46, RC=0068, REAS=00000000
ARC0833I RECYCLE ENDED ON VOLUME 701128, 0002641 DATAARC0833I (CONT.) SETS MOVED, TIME 03:02:42, RC=0016, REAS=00000000
HSM RECYCLE FAILED ON IBM5. PLEASE INVESTIGATE
****************************************************
ARC0833I RECYCLE ENDED ON VOLUME I26188, 0000001 DATAARC0833I (CONT.) SETS MOVED, TIME 18:51:03, RC=0034, REAS=00000000
I have tried all the possibilities as suggested in the manual but couldn't figure out anything.
could anyone of you help? |

One possibility is a HSM / TMS mismatch. HSM thinks the tape is a HSM tape and the TSM thinks differently and has somehow scratched and reused the tape. This happened a lot at one site I was at.
Also, it may be worth performing an AUDIT MEDIACONTROLS on the failing volumes.
When was the last time that you performed a full CDS audit ? |

I have tried AUDIT MEDIACONTROLS for failing volumes but getting following error messages
AUDIT MEDIACONTROLS VOLUMES(702111)
/* ERR 131 702111 - CANNOT BE MOUNTED
/* MSG 905 - ALLOCATION ERROR FOR DSN(HSMA.BACKTAPE.DATASET)
/* MSG 998 - AUDIT CONTINUING, COMMAND ACTIVITY LOG MAY CONTAIN ADDITIONAL INFOR
- END OF - ENHANCED AUDIT - LISTING -
I am not very sure how do we check if it has been caused by TMS or HSM.
I believe we have not full CDS audit from a a long time.
Could you please suggest? |

1) Are the required tapes inside of the tape robot (assumes you have one) - That usually fails a recycle if the tape is not available.
2) What is the status of the tape volser within the TMS, is it HSM or has it been over written by something else.
3) A full CDS audit can take days, even weeks, auditing every CDS for every error. I always run with NOFIX as running with FIX requires that NO other HSM activity happens to ensure data integrity of the CDS. Easy enough to check out the errors caused by HSM processing.
Good luck, because I'm off until Monday now.

I have used this 'AUDIT MEDIACONTROLS VOLUMES(707045)'
but it seems to be giving many "FIXCDS T" command to run
/* FIXCDS T 'SP-707045-0000' VERIFY(X'00000094' HSM3.BACK.T445323.NUXUD.ALKY.J0192) PATCH(X'00000094' + */
/* X'404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040') */
/* FIXCDS T 'SP-707045-0000' VERIFY(X'00000094' + */
/* X'404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040404040') PATCH(X'00000094' + */
/* N2XUD.ALKY.GENPARS)
I am not sure How to use them and what impact can it have on the actual backed up dataset.
what impact will these commands have on actual backed up dataset. Will we able to recover those datasets in the case of fails? |

The audit mediacontrols cross references the BCDS/OCDS and tape contents to come up with a load of FIXCDS statements.
By running the audit with FIX it executes the commands and synchronises the two CDS and tape contents.
Then the tape should recycle OK. If you want to know what it is suggesting, then go through the HSM diagniostics manual and trace every offset against every FIXCDS command to see what HSM thinks is correct.
It has always worked for me in the past, as HSM auditing itself knows far more about what is going on internally than I ever will.
Also, do a LIST TTOC and is there are any known problems with tapes they will be easily identifiable, and should be put through audit mediacontrols. |

Is there any way that we can get all these fixcds in one dataset. as all it is displaying in HSMLOG, from where it is very difficult to copy and paste |

Try it and see what happens, HSM will let you know if the syntax is right or not. |

Look at the ODS (out dataset) parameter |
