search the forums ( jcl and dfsort ) with "INREC" "OUTREC" and with the manual You will be able to understand the snippets posted

How new are you? If you are very new start reading the JCL manuals and then start reading abt SORT JCL's.
To put in simple words
INREC - reformats the input records before the records are sorted or merged
OUTREC - reformats the input records after the records are sorted or merged.
Search the manuals, write a small sort JCL using INREC and OUTREC and then post if you face any issues. |

If you're not familiar with DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL, I'd suggest reading through "z/OS DFSORT: Getting Started". It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will show you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols. You can access it online, along with all of the other DFSORT books, from:
