what is the size of the thing...
usually ISPF substitutes BROWSE to EDIT/VIEW when the thing is too large for the region size |

are you in endevor and trying to edit,
or are you attempting to edit an ispf pds member either
thru the Mainmenu 2 option (edit)
or 3.4 option?
what was the destination of the retrieved element? |

Hi ... enrico-sorichetti, dbzTHEdinosauer -
I have two things to mention at this point :
1) I have retrieved the member to my local PDS. I am accessing the local PDS using 3.4 option present in the ISPF menu. I am trying to EDIT it. When I try editing it opens in BROWSE mode. It's not allowing me to EDIT the element.
2) This(Unable to EDIT) is happening only when I am retrieving the element in newly created PDS. When I try retrieving the same in old exixting PDS it's allowing me to EDIT and it's functioning is normal.
Could you please tell me why it's happening in the newly created PDS.
I am creating a NEW PDS using the foll options
Data Set Name . . . : MC68TDPB.TEMP.OCT11
Management class . . . KEEP
Storage class . . . . SCBASE
Volume serial . . . . DXR24I
Device type . . . . .
Data class . . . . . . DEFAULT
Space units . . . . . TRACK
Average record unit (M, K, or U)
Primary quantity . . 1 (In above units)
Secondary quantity 10 (In above units)
Directory blocks . . 0 (Zero for sequential data set) *
Record format . . . . FB
Record length . . . . 80
Block size . . . . . 32720
Kindly Advice ... |

You are not creating a PDS.
try HI COB after you open the dataset (PS). |

point 1... OK
point 2... off topic, highlighting comes after edit/view/browse !
edit/view/browse is independent odf the datset organization,
the only thing to find out is ENDEVOR behavior when extracting to a sequential file rather than to a member of a PDS?
(IIRC ISPF copy behaves like that, coping to a pds will copy member by member,
copying to a sequential dataset will junk one after the other all the members )
and that can be found simply scrolling up and down the thing...
very basic problem determination action
but the TS only complained, without answering my question...
there are two cases when ispf substitutes browse to edit/view
invalid record format could ( UNDEFINED for example )
and file size ... ( that' s what I asked about but without success )
when editing all the data must be in memory, when browsing only a screen of data will be in memory( rough concept ) |

Just tried to retrieve into a PS and edit. It opened an unhighlighted dataset (just like in Browse mode). Was just curious whether the OP also experienced the same thing.
AFAIK retrieving into a PS having VB record format would give such problem (which is not the case here). |

You still did not answer my question....
scenario 1) existing pds extract and edit OK - right ??
scenario 2) new pds, not a pds but looks like a sequential dataset, recfm seems ok.
the only difference is the datset organization..
check again for recfm fb lrecl 80
so reread my previous post and reply to those questions
I do not care what the ENDEVOR tells, I want to know what is in the dataset You are trying to edit
type in the command line "M" and hit PF8 and look how may lines ou have there
if things work in an existing pds no reason not to behave he same in a new one |
