Hello,
In older releases of Easytrieve, i believe you could accomplish the same thing using an Alpha field VARYING.
What release are you using? |

Dick,
Thanks for the reply. I don't know exactly which release we are using. And nobody in our team know on this. How can we find out the release number? I referred run JCL's log but couldn't find any information. |

Hello,
When you run an Easytrieve job, the version is printed at/near the top of the page that shows the code. |

Dick,
We are using release 6.4.
I could find the following statement in the Easytrieve job.
CA-EASYTRIEVE PLUS-6.4 0311 |

Hello,
With that release, i believe defining the field as alpha varying is the closest you can get.
Found this in the 6.4 doc - maybe it will help:
Code: |
EMPNAME - CHAR(20) (NOT NULL)
WORKDEPT - DECIMAL(3,0) (NOT NULL)
EMPPHONE - DECIMAL(5,0) (NULL)
DEPTNAME - VARCHAR(20) (NOT NULL)
DEPTNUMBER - DECIMAL(3,0) (NOT NULL)
The following example shows working storage field definitions for the sample
tables in the previous example:
DEFINE EMPNAME W 20 A
DEFINE WORKDEPT W 2 P O
DEFINE EMPPHONE W 3 P O
DEFINE DEPTNAME W 22 A VARYING
DEFINE DEPTNUMBER W 2 P O

Dick,
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have to use VARCHAR field in the file structure.
Can we declare VARCHAR as shown below? (Field starts at 31st colomn with 30 byte length)
Code: |
MIDL-NAME 31 30 A VARYING
|
Please provide me a link or document which can explain the above if available. |

I don't know - it shouldn't cause any damage to try it

The only link i know is via CA support. If your organization is licensed to use the product, all of the material is available for free. |
