I have a tape dataset and I have zipped it and stored in mainframe but I cant view that zip file because it shows junk values. So how to view it in mainframe itself...I can see it by sending the zip file as an attachment by using IKJEFT1B utility...But I need to view the ZIP file in mainframe itself...Can someone help.

By definition, a ZIP file cannot be viewed -- not on the mainframe, not on the PC, not on a Mac, not on a Unix system. In order to view it, you will need to UNZIP it and then view it. The various ZIP viewers used on PCs and so forth UNZIP to a temporary file which is then viewed -- they don't directly view the ZIP file.

The mainframe ZIP products allow the same functionality through the ISPF interfaces. However, there's still the usual issue of needing tape mount authority for a TSO user.

My aim is to reduce the usage of tape..we are having datasets which are in tape and stored for many years..So what i am thinking is to zip them and store them in tape again..but when our job runs it needs that tape dataset which i have zipped...whether we can give a zip file as ipnput to jcl...

Yes, to an UNZIP step. . . Then you could use the unzipped file as input to the remainder of the job.

You may want to talk with your storage management people about setting up these "old" files as their own group and just allow them to be migrated. This would store them "offline" most of the time and remove the need for all of the old tapes. When needed, they would be recalled and be usable directly.

HSM is used to migrate infrequently used DASD files to tape. HSM uses its own compression mechanism (and possibly with hardware compression). You can also use HMIGRATE command to manually move datasets. And when you need it, the recall is automatic (though might take several minutes).

I think you should let the normal storage management processes work, rather than building your own.
