I've asked other programmers here who are using GDG, they haven't created a MODEL. They create just the GDG INDEX & use it in the program.

But I read in a book.
1. GDG index should be created
2. GDG model should be created

I've read in some GDG topic that if DFSMS is used then we don't have to create a model.

How can I know that we are using DFSMS or not?

Yes the book is not wrong, check if there was some foot-note about DFSMS; MODEL is no longer required if DFSMS is installed and tailored correctly. Also, realize that only one model will ever need to be created, and that your storage administrators will have already created it.

In 3.4 do I against any of your own datasets and if the STORAGE CLASS field is not blank, then the dataset is SMS managed.

99.9% of shops are SMS managed, with only a few that for some reason refuse to go there.

If your SMS ACS routines are set up properly then you do not need to create a model GDG.

Great knowledge stuff for me, but if it shows "DEFAULT", should I go with word-meaning - this DSN is with default Storage Calss.

Yes, use IDCAMS to create the GDG base, and if your SMS ACS routines are correctly set up then any GDG that is created - SMS or NONSMS, DASD or tape will not need any model gdg or model dscb associated with it.
