Hi,

I need to backup 50 Datasets.

Ex : ABCD.EFGH will be backed up to MyID.ABCD.EFGH.BKP.

Since, the no. of datasets are plenty, I am planning to submit a Batch Fileaid job for taking backups of all 50 Datasets in one go - 50 Steps.

Each of these 50 datasets have different record lengths and Block sizes / parameters.

Is there an option (like 'MODEL' in VSAM) such that the Ouptut dataset takes in the DCB properties of the Input dataset provided within each step of the JCL ? This will prevent me from having to specifying DCB parameters for each of the Ouput datasets in each of the 50 steps.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Karthik.

Hello,

I'd suggest you use something other than fileaid. . .

Your best bet would be to ask your storage management admins for their recommendation on which availability utility to use.

DFDSS or FDR come to mind. . .

Hi,

If all the DSNs are on DASD & the back-up is being taken on DASD itself, you might use the below code, without wasting much sapce:
Code:

//STEP1OF1 EXEC PGM=IEBGENER
//STATOUT  DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSUDUMP DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSOUD   DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSOUT   DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN    DD DUMMY
//SYSUT1   DD DISP=SHR,DSN=file.to.copy
//SYSUT2   DD DSN=backued.up.file
//            DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE),
//            DCB=*.SYSUT1       <--- DCB CHARACTERISCS OF INPUT

coding BLKSIZE=0 in output might help further in saving the space, not tested yet though.

To find what consequences can come when you code DCB=*SYSUT1, you can check below link:

Hi Anuj,

That will take one step per file. Most places/people do not want a separate step per fle.

To create a wholesale backup, other utilities perform far faster than gener and with much more flexibility.

The storage admins can provide direction on which utiltiy is used in that particular environment.

Thanks a ton all. The IEBGENER Solution really helped. I had to repeat it for 50 datasets though. Will check with the Admin guys for any particular utility used for wholesale backup.

Thanks,
Karthik.

what' s wrong in using DFDSS....
unless You used the wrong terms and simply wanted to copy something
even in this case a DFDSS copy with the additional parameter RENAMU

will provide the same result, in a single step, with better performance
