Hello Lakshminarasimha Rao and welcome to the forums,
Is your question related to this multi-year-old topic?
What is it you want to do? Your question is not at all clear. You've posted some command, but haven't explained just what you want for output.
If you will explain your requirement and provide a meaningful subject in your reply, i'll start a new topic for your question. |

Hello,
As far as i'm aware, you need additonal software (i.e. FileAid) to properly view vsam data in your tso/ispf session.
Most who try the PRINT command are not happy with it.
You might ask your system support or storage management if there is some tool that you can use on your system. |

Lakshmi,
We use FILEAID to view a VSAM file. Type FA on the command prompt and see if it is available in your shop. |

This may be site-specific or installation selectable.
On one of the systems i support, FileAid is available, but FA is an invalid command. |

If 'FA' is not valid, how long could it take a person to look at the TSO options (such as 'other software') and find if FileAid was there? Ask a cube mate? Ask a project leader? Ask tech suypport? |

Hi,
VSAM support in native ISPF is very limited; in particular, the EDIT, VIEW and BROWSE services do not support VSAM data sets. The VSAM Utilities (accessed via the 3.2.V option) is a multiple-panel ISPF dialog (vaguely recall, was introduced in ISPF V4) which only supports the DELETE, DEFINE and LISTCAT commands. The Delete (D) function in other ISPF utility functions (such as option 3.2, Data Set Utility or option 3.4, Data Set List) do not support VSAM; however, the TSO command DELETE (DEL) can be used on the Data Set List panel to delete a VSAM data set.
Several vendors offer VSAM editors which also provide a Browse capability; such as:
STARTOOL (Serena)
ISPF VSAM Utilities (MacKinney Systems)
MAX DATA/UTIL (MAX Software)
File-Aid (Compuware)
INSYNC (Macro4)
DITTO/ESA (IBM)
IBM File Manager
Text/E (4.ST)
CA-FileMaster Plus (CA)
VSERV (Phoenix Software)
File Marvel
But they are 'pay for the product' type.
HTH.. |

I wonder if there's an application on the CBT Tape? When I worked for CBT we had a TSO command (%LIST, IIRC), that allowed someone to view data in VSAM and SMF formats. |

Hmm s, You are right. In that case should i give FILEAID instead of FA?
Just confirm whether FA and FILEAID are 2 diff ways to chk if it is available. If not, how is it decided? |

Those may be ways on some systems - it will all depend on how the system is configured.
To find out what are the ways to execute FileAid on a system, i'd suggest talking with the system support people. It is nearly always on some menu, but there may be one or more shorcuts - all of which is site-specific. |

In my site i use 'FA' to use fileaid and it works. I had asked that ques just to get an idea on the different ways to use fileaid.
Anyways thanks for the details. |

Me too, on ISPF primary menu, F.FA and you are in File-Aid world..
One thing I don't understand here, why do they keep changing these options at different sites. May be, one site is paying for, say, ten out of all the options available for a product; & other site is using fifteen options out of all. If , say, eight options are common at both the sites, why dont they provide the same 'command name' for those..? What could be the probable reason behind...any guesses..? |

IMHO, "they" aren't changing anything.
Look at your desktops (the one you sit at and the one with a bunch of icons). I suspect that very few of us have precisely the same definition of either. We have either set them up a way we prefer or they have been allowed to evolve to where they are now.
TSO/ISPF configurations are quite similar (IMHO).
I suspect there is also some of the "male dog syndrome" at work - it has to be "marked" so that others will know it is "our turf". |

The other thing is, a lot of shops will provide different ISPF main menus and different options to the user depending on their role within the organization. |

The TSOVSAM document tells you how VSAM files are supported in TSO and ISPF; it's here: gsf-soft.com/Documents/TSOVSAM.shtml
The ISPF section of this document gives you pointers to free TSO/ISPF commands which you can use to Browse or View VSAM files. It also lists all the commercial products which are available. |
