Hi!

My requirement is:
A program processes an input file. Depending on the input data, numerous generations of a GDG-file should be created. The number of GDG-generations is not known as it depends on the data used as input.

My question:
is it possible, to have numerous generations of a GDG-file created without knowing the number of generations needed, e.g. without hardcoding it? Or in other words: is it possible to create a number of generations dynamically?

Thanks for your help!

Yes it is possible, but not within jcl itself,

there are two ways
... dynamic allocation inside the program,
... prescan of Your data to generate a step to do the allocations..

but for such processing needs the best thing is to speak to Your storage support group,
after all it is one of their duties to define the proper standards and advice on the proper procedures

Without knowing your set up, as a storage guy I would start asking questions when numerous GDG gens started cropping up.

Would it not be better to use individual files for individual conditions / data, because at tleast that way you know what should be in a file, rather than in an unknown GDG gen.
