Hi All,

I was wondering if there is a way or can we encrypt a field in Cobol?

the main purpose is: I have a MFS screen where the users input "User name" and "Password" to log in to the application. The Cobol program that process the inputs, should encrypt the password field. Is it possible? or there is no point at all to encrypt at that point??

Thanks,
RC

Yes, i believe there is no reason to do anyting else at that point.

I would make the password field invisable on the screen, so that no one could simply read it over the user's shoulder. . .

Thanks Mr. Scherrer.

If I may ask another question, which is, We have a web application Login screen too. So, is it safe to send the username and password, across the network as a transaction to the cobol (MPP) program?

Thanks,
RC

I'd suggest you talk with your network and security admin people and follow (or create) the rules on how this should work in your environment.

Some of sites i've supported believe being on an intranet (rather than the internet) provides enough protection. Some use secure connections. It will largely depend on your organization. I'm not part of the groups that make these choices, i just have to follow whatever rules are already in place icon_wink.gif

Thank you and appreciate your response Mr Scherrer.
