Hello
When I started as a programmer the computer room was accessible to programmers you could pick up yor reports, request tape mounts and have card decks executed. In most computer rooms there was also a keypunch machine for fixing bad job cards and such. |

Hello Mr Lloyd (sr) and welcome to the forum,
If you look around, you may spot more than just a few others who started on cards too

I did get a peek at the z9 while at the client data center... the operator (or data center manager, who knows?) shooed me off before I could get a good look. So have I seen it? yes. really? well.... |

Hello and welcome to the forum,
Suggest you talk with someone in the Computer Operations group (or your manager) and ask for a bit of a tour (if your office is somewhere near the computer room and not a remote site). |

Hi Dick,
She is from Pune (a city in India), a "tour" seems to be a distant dream. However, she might try to get in touch with CDAC or Maple (local Mainframs coaching cetnres) they have got their own Mainframes, I've heard. |

Hi Anuj,
Yup, i knew Pune is in India, but not that this would be a remote site
I've been some places where the IT staff is "just down the hall" from the data center and most of the people had never seen the inside of the computer room. |

started on a 370/125, worked on 3033E, serial number 000002 - so many ECs (engineering changes) that it didn't have doors on it because of all the wires going from one frame to the next. Then countless boxes after that. Only ever saw one 360 in production on a manufacturing line. Used 3084 TCMs as paper weights. Mainframes were just big boxes. Now they are just small boxes. |

Hi,
I started with MVS 3.7 on a 370/158. Most beautiful machine I ever saw was a 370/168 MP. Storage was on 3330 and tape was the reel stuff on very real units. Did a lot of working with punched cards, too.
Must admit, it's been some time sincs I actually saw a mainframe. Not that I actually miss it. After all, nowadays they're just as nice looking as a fridge. |
