How to know the given file is KSDS or ESDS without using File-aid or ListCAT?

find the jcl that allocated the file.

why would you not want to use a utility whose sole purpose is to inform you of the files' attributes.

Is this another silly question like how to open a file without opening it?

One has an index component and the other does not.
Other than relying on naming conventions, I don't see how you could....

Hard way -

An Assembler program, which issues a VSAM TESTCB Macro, specifying an ATRB keyword of ESDS or KSDS, will give you the answer.

Refer to the following link -

HTH....

Regards,

Bill

Hi All,

Do we have the Key and data component for the ESDS as well??

As far as i know only KSDS has the two components.
So if we do a TSO option 3.4, we can check the type vsam file.

I think the problem will be to differentiate RRDS and ESDS.
