I would like to transfer a huge PDS (which has aroud 5000 members) to another server with the members in .txt format.
I had read about PKZIP + FTP but don't know much about PKZIP. Will this be possible with PKZIP. If so is there any specific parameter to be given?
Is there any other option other than PKZIP / FTP? |

Of course.

That would depend on what other data transfer facilities you have available to you. The answer is "possibly". |

Hi,
As of now we don't have any constraints on the data transfer facility. Can you please let me know about the other options in detail? |

Normally, for server-to-server data transfers within an enterprise, you would use specific products that deal with managing these processes. A few I can think of off the top of my head are Connect:Direct, XCOM, and Connect:Enterprise. Which product do you have available? |

Hi,
Requirement:
We have totally 20000 elements (PGM,CPY, etc) in around 20 PDS. We need to download this source code to a FTP Server in .txt format. This will be a one time activity. After this initial download, we need to refresh/download the modified components (around 1000) on weekly basis to the same FTP server.
Question:
1. What are all the options available to download from Mainframe to the FTP Server? We are open to all data transfer facilities.
Please clarify our questions in the below options as well.
Options:
1. PKZIP - We are actually trying to automate the whole process. So we use PKZIP to zip huge PDS and FTP it to the server, we have question on how are we going to automatically unzip it on the server end. Is there any ways to automate the unzipping process?
2. Direct FTP of the PDS (individual members as such without zipping it) to the server. In this case we have a plan to repeat the process using a REXX tool to FTP the members one-by-one. (20000 members)
Will there be any performance issue with the connectivity in doing so?
3. Please list the other options if any. |

My opinion?
I like the PKZIP option. The PKZIP program can store and (optionally) compress all of the contents of the PDS's into a single .zip archive. You can specify naming rules that would allow you to add the .txt file extension to each of the PDS members, saving you the trouble of having to do that programatically. As far as automatically un-zipping the file, I can't answer that, only to say that I imagine that, as a server, that machine should be able to handle that process somehow. |
