Friends,
Could anyone of you please explain me the process of volume backup of a vsam dataset and what will happen when we restore that backup back to the vsam dataset.

Just take decision...
You want a volume backup or ...
a dataset backup ???
Also what product are You using to take backups ??
a generic question deserves a generic answer !
if You restore because of a brioken original, then You might replace the original without any damage.. ( I said might )
if You need to restore and keep the original for any other purpose
( audit, compare, simulated reruns, .... who knows? )
then it would be wiser to restore with a rename |

And are there associated elements to the VSAM file, like AIX and path ? |
