Hi,

I have few queries on CA1-DISPATCHER -

1. Is there a tape copy or tape recycle process for DISPATCH on z/os?

2. Can we convert physical (cartridge) tape(s) data into VTS (virtual tape service)? If yes, how?

Yes.

First, make a plan on how you will manage the virtual tape "library".

Then, install the VTS product and do some testing with data that is only for this test. Most systems define multiple "pools", so you will want to decide which pools will be for which data.

Once you are comfortable with the VTS operation/management, "migrating" the data is done by running many tape copies from "real" tape to virtual tape. It has been a few years since i was involved with a tape-to-vts migration, so the copy may have been improved. We migrated most of a 2,000,000+ 3490 cart library to v-tape. The automated tape library continues to run as previously, with the additional virtual volumes.

This entire process is typically planned and executed by the storage management people.

Our team backs up the storage team (work distribution during heavy load). As a part of change we received this today and none in my team knows (so it had been pushed back). So, wanted to know how exactly is done. It would be great, if you could post some more info.

Any suggestion for first query?

I believe you will need to talk with your storage people (your team may be involved, but i suspect it will still be "theirs"). Also, once a vts product is decided upon, i'd suggest your group, as well as the storage admins, have regular conversations with the vendor's technical people so your organization can learn the product as well as hear what the vendor can provide about some early do's and don't's.
