What does the compile link do?

Hi everybody,
you know in the ordinary cobol compile job, there are 2 steps: compile and link, I want to know what do these compile and link do? especially the Link step, thanks very much.

Hello,

The compile validates the source code and generates an "object" module.

The link processes the object module and any other needed modules and creates an executable module known as a load module.
