Hi,
I have a JCL which converts huge Tape datasets to DASD using IEBGENER.
The job uses lots of CPU as well as elapsed time.
Is there any other utility to use instead of IEBGENER? will sort or IDCAMS are good enuf in terms of reducing the CPU?
Any pointers will be of great help.
Thanks,
Viji |

The only way to find out for sure is to try it yourself and compare. If you have DFSORT, you can just change PGM=IEBGENER to PGM=ICEGENER to use DFSORT's ICEGENER. |

Krisprems,
The DFSORT Tuning Guide you referenced has general information about performance, but there are many "variables". As I said, the only sure way to determine performance for a specific situation is to do a comparison for that specific situation. |

Frank -
The numbers regarding IEBGENER vs. ICEGENER from the tuning guide seem very definitive and convincing... I was pretty amazed, even without testing.

Again, those results were obtained for a particular situation. See the caveat at:

It's certainly true that DFSORT's ICEGENER will do quite well in many situations. I'd be the last person to "knock" DFSORT's ICEGENER in any way (I developed the front end to DFSORT Copy for it). I'm just trying to indicate that as always your mileage may vary, and the only way to know for sure is to try it for a given situation. |

Did you try IDCAMS? |
