I did the same thing and got a return code of 4 (because there was no data to copy). Here's my JCL as generated by FileAid:

Code:

1 //MV603SCN JOB (7350,SSZZ,MSSZZ0,00),'ROY WARE      ',
  //      CLASS=T,MSGCLASS=H,REGION=0M,PRTY=3,NOTIFY=MV603
2 //MV603    OUTPUT DEFAULT=YES,JESDS=ALL
3 //FASTEP   EXEC PGM=FILEAID,REGION=6M
4 //STEPLIB  DD  DISP=SHR,DSN=SYSZR.FAMVS.V8R9M5.LOAD
5 //SYSPRINT DD  SYSOUT=*
6 //SYSLIST  DD  SYSOUT=*
7 //DD01     DD  DSN=MVDV.MV603.SSZZ.CICS.SC30F.CHECKPNT,
  //             DISP=SHR
8 //DD01O    DD  DSN=MVDV.MV603.SSZZ.CICS2.SC30F.CHECKPNT,
  //             DISP=OLD
9 //SYSIN    DD  *

and the resulting SYSOUT:

Code:

1...5...10...15...20...25...30...35...40...45...50...55...60...65...70...75...80

DD01     DSN=MVDV.MV603.SSZZ.CICS.SC30F.CHECKPNT OPENED AS RRDS,
             LRECL=294,NRECRDS=735,CINV=512,MAXRBA=376320,VOL=VSM311
DD01O    DSN=MVDV.MV603.SSZZ.CICS2.SC30F.CHECKPNT OPENED AS RRDS(LOAD),
             LRECL=294,CINV=512,MAXRBA=50176,VOL=VSM314
$$DD01 COPY
ABOVE FUNCTION ENDED ON EMPTY DATA SET                                   RC=4

0 RECORDS WRITTEN TO DD01O-MVDV.MV603.SSZZ.CICS2.SC30F.CHECKPNT                 ***RECORD COUNT***
                       VOL=VSM314

It is my experience that a return code of 12 indicates a very serious error.
