Can somebody help me out in what an active generation is in a GDG. I have come across the current generation. But when I went thru few sites which said that they are SMS attributes but I wanted to know how they are to be specified while creation.

Hello,

Please re-phrase your question.

I am (and i'm sure others are) not familiar with this term "what an active generation is in a GDG".

If you post what you found and your question(s) about it, we may be able to help.

As far as "creating" GDGs, you need to do a DEFINE for the base and you use +1 and DISP=(NEW,CATLG, DELETE) to create new generations.

I'm not sure how SMS is related unless there is something specific to your system.

If a valid DATACLAS is allocated to the +1 GDG via the ACS routines, there is no need to code a model DSCB for the +1 generation. This holds true for SMS managed, non SMS managed and tape GDG's too.

The status of a GDG can be DEFERRED, ROLLED IN, ROLLED OUT. I think there might be another one, but can't remember at the moment.

Hi Dick,

I corrected once again...Sorry my post was not clear. I meant that I have been using and aware of current generations, how to create them and reference them. But I was not aware of wat a active generation is??? So I searched and found what Expat had mentioned :
ACTIVE
DEFERRED,
ROLLED IN &
ROLLED OUT
It was mentioned that they are SMS attributes.I tried to dig in but cudnt find much.

Thanks,
Rarvins

If it's DEFERRED or ROLLED OUT you use the absolute generation to access it, if it's ACTIVE or ROLLED IN you can use either the absolute or relative generation to access the data.

Hello,

I believe another way to say it is that if you use tso/ispf 3.4 and specify the gdg base as the dataset name, the list of dsn.GnnnnVnn entries shown are ACTIVE.
