DFSORT & SYNCSORT are products (and CA-SORT, too).
SORT is just an alias for these products (also ICE, ICEMAN).
With SYNCSORT/DFSORT, you can sort, merge, and copy data sets. You can use DFSORT to do simple tasks such as alphabetizing a list of names, or you can use it to aid complex tasks such as taking inventory or running a billing system. DFSORT gives you versatile data handling capabilities at the record, field and bit level.

DFSORT is IBM's sort product. Syncsort is Syncsort's sort product. CA-Sort is CA's sort product.
PGM=SORT or PGM=ICEMAN will invoke the sort product used at your site which could be DFSORT, Syncsort or CA-SORT.
If you're not familiar with DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL, I'd suggest reading through "z/OS DFSORT: Getting Started". It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will show you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols. You can access it online, along with all of the other DFSORT books, from:

If you or anyone else on this board would like some documents prepared by the DFSORT Team that describe what we see as the advantages of DFSORT over Syncsort, as well as considersations for migrating from Syncsort to DFSORT, send me an e-mail offline (yaeger@us.ibm.com). Please put "DFSORT" somewhere in your Subject line to catch my attention. |

Hello,
If your organization is licensed to use Syncsort, the documentation is available for free via Syncsort support.
Their documentation is copyright material and may not be posted on or linked to the forum. |
