Once again, i find a thread i'm participating in being locked and the user banned - and this was that user's first post
A technical question was asked and a couple of us had replied and now the topic is locked and the user banned.
I thought there was considerable discussion a while back that there would be no more first-post banning unless the post was something most would consider worse than just a mistake. If someone posts incorrectly, there were supposed to be warnings and an explanation to them - not an instant ban. Several people seem to be following the "give'm a warning, not a ban" thought, but obviously, some are not. . .
This is also being posted in the Suggestions & Feedback section. It is posted here (Off Topics) because the locked topic is in the Off Topics forum.

IMHO, First posters should expect no more than a warning and a PM to try to put them on track.
I also believe that bans should not, except in the most serious cases be permanent. |

I have reactivated the user and moved it to the correct forum. |

For this

I would imagine that this user was banned because of the statement:
I request you to send the reply as soon as possible |
my thought would be that this was cause for a warning. . . . At least i thought we were heading that way. . . If they kept up doing things like that a ban would happen, but again, not for the first post and no feedback.
Please also note that 3 of us (2 moderators and 1 very strong user)replied to the post and did not see a need to warn/ban. It was after we were "in conversation" that the ban happened. Interestingly, the topic is now gone from the Off Topics forum? |

This one has a request asking the user to change their user name. |
I have done this.

I prefer to issue a warning instead of a Ban for this.
And I recommend our moderators, to provide a "Note" in the post explaining the REASON, whenever they Warn or Ban. Any suggestions? |

I believe that any poster should be given warnings before being banned. Also that any ban except for the most serious offences should not be a permanent ban. After all this forum is here to HELP the posters, not banish them. OK, so a temporary ban will in most cases bring the miscreants into understanding the rules of this forum, and also to abide by them.
I also think that there should be a concensus amongst the moderators as to what should be imposed upon said miscreants, and very strongly believe that this should not be discussed in open forum. OK, so every moderator has their own opinion of what is a suitable action to take in a given situation, but their decision is NOT ALWAYS the right one.
Do we as moderators need specific guidlines to do this or that in a given situation, or can we rely upon common sense to prevail ??? Damned good question it appears given the number of instant bans flying around.
I joined this forum to help people understand the things that we have learned over the years and to pass on that information, (OK, I know, I'm no angel with some of my replies), but also to provoke them to learn for themselves as well. NOT TO BAN THEM !!!
So that's it, my two penneth worth. |

Late, but never not there.....
I have been railing under the "SWIFT HAND OF GODs" and would really like to see (as I know is possible) a forum that is visible ONLY to those that moderate.
Rather than having to PM to several other moderators, a simple posting in such a forum would allow us (and the other(s) with the "swift hand") to at least start to understand the logic of the punishments applied.
It is doable. It is a smart thing. And, as long as the "BANNER of the opera" is going to have a free hand, I am having problems maintaining the standards Sony has laid upon us and given us the responsibility for. |

FWIW, I've never used the ban or warn buttons. I have sent a few PMs to people who post a lot of misinformation in my Forum (probably not intentionally) asking them to consider not posting there to make my life easier. But that's it. I guess I'm probably overly tolerant. |

Frank,
Again, welcome back.....
You have been putting in some overtime catching up, sorry we couldn't/didn't manage to cover for you....
Personally, I warned, sometime twice, but if that (and PMs) didn't stop the behavior, I' just delete the crap and watch my outbox to see if the (idiot/gentleman) ever picked up his/her mail... heck, I've still got PMs from mid Feb sitting in my Outbox and one from the beginning of May that still keeps posting but has never looked at his PM????? |

A mods forum may not solve the problem, but I do feel that it would go a reasonable way to the mods being able to discuss things in a forum, and hopefully lead to a lot less bannings.
The forum is here to help people to learn what we already know, and IMHO banning them does not help them at all - so anything that can help cut down on bans, or even the introduction of temporary bans will not drive people away from the forum, and hopefully encourage them to actively participate by following the rules. |

Yes, i believe a moderator forum would be a good thing

It might also be a good thing if we (the moderators) could see "who" clicked the "ban" tab. If one or 2 people are issuing 98% of the bans, it would be quite visable. Another practice i'd recommend is that whan a warning or ban was issued, the reason be entered into the post that caused the warning/ban.
As others have mentioned, banning doesn't accomplish what we are trying to do - provide assistance. |
