Can anyone explain the alternate key concept in the Select statement

select <file-name> assign to <system-name>
organization is indexed
access mode is ......
record key is ........
alternate key is ....
file status........

Hello,

Alternate keys provide additional random access to the file. In addition to reading records directly by the primary key (i.e. employee-id), you might want to access people in the same department (i.e dept-no).
