Hi, I would like to know if we can use Winrunner, QTP or any other functional testing tools with Mainframes. They work fine with GUI screens. Is there a way to use them with Mainframe screens (CICS, IMS DC etc.). Kindly let me know.

Hello,

There many testing tools for the mainframe. They do not typically work on Win-based and unix systems. The reverse is also true - unix and Win-based testing tools typically wo not work on the mainframe.

For each particular tool, you need to look at the specs from the vendor.

Dear d.sch.,

Thanks for your response. What I heard was that QTP and Winrunner can be used with mainframes provided we use some Terminal Emulator software along with them. I wanted to know if anybody has actually used these tools in combination with emulation software with successful results.

Even if you use QTP or Winrunner with Terminal Emulator, the tools will treat IBM Mainframe Online screens as an object and captures image for comparing before and after test results. Sometimes results may be unpredictable.
I doubt whether you can mask any particular screen fields etc of the Online screen.

Hello,

Sounds like we don't all have the same definition of "mainframe testing" icon_smile.gif

If you want to record sessions on the pc for later playback, you might use winrunner. When i think of "mainframe testing" i more often think of the testing/debugging cycle and tools to help with that.

Again, depending on what you want to do, i'd suggest doing a bit research about each particular product you are interested in and see how well it fits your requirement.

HI d.sch.

I am able to see your point. Mainframe testing is much more than session automation, recording and playback. Thanks for your response.
