Once the Ban Button is clicked, is there any track of why the ban was imposed? |
No, unless the moderator has provided a note in the post regarding this.

If a moderator bans someone, does that moderator have the aurhority to "let them back in"? |
Currently No, only admin can Re-ban. But we will consider to provide this facility to Global moderators.

What about prevent the registration from student users and redirecting them to a new forum like mainframeindia.com instead of banning them here? |

I think we may have covered this before, but in my view, a warning and a quiet PM from a Mod or GM should suffice to bring most people back on track.
If it does come to a ban, can a variable temporary ban be imposed, say from 3 days to three months depending on the type of offence. I guess if they know that they can at some stage return to the forum they may well do. That way the offenders know that they can and will get bans, but not so severe as to stop them ever returning again.
Just an idea ........................... |

Hello,
Here's another example of someone getting banned for their first post. They joined on the 23rd of this month and probably after watching for a few days, posted a question. Admitedly, not a very well presented question, but was maybe the best their experience level and use of English would permit.
My preference would be to warn them and explain the warning. If they are unwilling or unable to learn how to post requests properly, a ban might well be used later.
I'm still trying to relate to 100 bans a month on average. . . . |

I'm not able to "edit" here |
Yes, Currently Admin can edit this Forum and Announcement Forum. Do you need the Edit permission here?

I hope he was banned by Kevin, because of his signature. Anyway I have reactivated the user and PMed to change his signature.
Anyway what about removing the Ban control from our site? If we still need to BAN a user, we can issue 3 warnings continuously, isn't it? |

This is getting ridiculous, yesterday a new member posted his first post. Poor title, possibly wrong forum and a dumb question. Then he proceeded to answer his post with another question, and then a third.
I edited the title and copied the two additional questions to the first while deleting the additional posts.
I PMed him and told him not to post multiple questions and he replied back that he was sorry and wouldn't do it again.
This morning I looked for his post (to provide maybe an answer and pointers to the manual with his answers) and when finally finding it in a different forum with a different title.
Banned: what is the size of SQLCA
Why?
He had read the rules, his first question was preceded by a paragraph long mantra reciting some of the rules and his desire to abide by them (which I deleted as not needed).
Why was he banned?
If he deserved to be banned for his dumb questions, there are several prominate members that I think should be banned for equally dumb answers. |

Yes, I have no other way than removing the 'Ban control' from this site. (Till knowing the result of ibmmainframes.com/viewtopic.php?t=20401
Dear moderators, If you really need to BAN a user(SPAM/ADDs), please issue 3 warnings continuously. Don't mistake me!!! I have no other choices. if you have one, please PM me. Keep in Touch.

Hello,
While it is harsh, i do believe we need the ability to ban.
Starting a new forum won't prevent the need to ban some people.
We just need to use it carefully. IMHO, a new person should get a PM and maybe a warning, but not a ban until they demonstrate they do not want to prticipate in an acceptable manner. Maybe i'm too "easy", but i'm not sure that a warning for a first post is a good practice. If they don't "change their way" in response to a PM, then warnings/ban would be appropriate.
Several times i've seen a post that i was tempted to "be ugly" responding to, but figured that i'd wait and review it another time. Often, by then, someone else had taken some action. |

Yes, we can still Ban a user by issuing 3 continuous warnings. And I didn't remove the Ban control from DFSORT, Job Vacancies & Fun Stuff Forums. Is it manageable?

I agree with you and now we are showing a message to all the new posters as:

Yes, we can't manage here without the Ban control. So we decided to give the BAN control back to moderators, but with the ability to 'REBAN' now. That means, if you press the Ban/Warn button by mistake, you can REDO that by issuing a REBAN. |
