Hi Friends,

1.Can you please let me know what is the difference between tape back up & DASD?
2.If a dataset is migrated then where does it reside?
3.When a job is trying to access a dataset where from it tries to access that(tape or DASD)?
4.What are possible places where a dataset can be available,,like tape,DASD,......?

1. Do you mean the difference between a tape backup and a DASD backup ? or a backup of a tape or DASD

2. Site specific, you will need to ask your storage guys about the way in which they have configured the ILM (Information Lifecycle Management) software, such as HSM, FDR/ABR, CA-DISK ............... etc. etc.

3. References the catalog to see what device the dataset resides on

4. Depends on your hardware availability, DASD, tape, optical volume

Pranta,

The dataset moves from DASD to tape volume.

Depending on the catalog entry or volume information you provided in the JCL, job access either DASD or tape.

Dint understand the question properly. But, it can be on optical disks also besides tape and DASD.

DASD is like a Hard disk on the PC, tape are tapes (as the name say). DASD access is faster than tape.

The dataset moves from DASD to tape volume.

And if ML2 is defined as DASD, then the dataset will reside on DASD. As I said, that is site specific and depends entirely on how the ILM software has been configured. I've worked at two sites that use DASD ML2.

Thanks for the updates Expat. I was in an impression, that dataset moves to tape upon migration.
