Hi All
Can anyone can tell me why we can't code in 73 column whether there is some compilation limitation for JCL. why we are shifted to second line when we try to code, why there are number at column 73 to 80. |

Hi
in past when Card was using to store the data first two byte were using to know the correct sequence of the card (like ATM card if we put wrong direction gives error) i read this from RANADE book
second reason when we find the two forward slashes in the first two position which indicate this is jcl code. |

I believe that you also cannot "use" col 72, as a non-blank there (e.g., "X") as well as a trailing comma was formerly required when this card was being continued. This requirement was eliminated years ago, with a just a trailing comma indicating a continued card, but it is still optional. |

Hello,
If you look in the Fine Manual, you will find that it is a "rule". We don't get to make them, but we must follow them.
For a bit of an explanation - for "cards" that have information beginning in col 1, cols 73-80 were often used for sequence number. |

Hello,
If you look at the top of web page, there is a "Manuals" link.
JCL manuals are available via that (so are many others).
Good luck and let us know if you have any questions |
