DD names are not exclusive to sort. Any utility or program can define a set of DD names for the data sets it uses. The purpose of a particular DD name is defined by the utility or program as well.
For example, SYSPRINT or SYSOUT are generally (though not always) DD names used for messages.
SYSUTx DD names can be used as temporary data sets (e.g. assembler, linkage editor) or as input and output data sets (e.g. IEBGENER), etc.
SYSOUT is DFSORT's message data set DD name. SORTIN is DFSORT's input data set DD name. SORTOUT is DFSORT's output data set DD name. (All of these names can be changed.) But any program can define SORTIN or SORTOUT as DD names (although that's probably not a good idea). |
