i have an input file in this fashion
empname departments
under this an employee may belong to many deaprtments...
ihow can we get the output as empname count using sort... |

Redefine the input as just empname and a packed constant of "1" and sort on the empname and sum on the constant. Reformat the output to print. |

Please show an example of your input records and what you want for output with appropriate values. Also, what is the RECFM and LRECL of the input file? |
