Want to know about the use of the sortlib statement

i encountered a jcl where a step is calling a cobol program.
in that some input files are used.along with it there is sortlib statement which points to a pds with many members.a workfile is also used in that jcl.
i want to know about the use of the sortlib statement.

SORTLIB is almost never needed for DFSORT. It contains modules used for DFSORT's very old conventional technique which is only used for a sort using tape work data sets (highly discouraged) or a merge when the Blockset technique cannot be used (unusual).
