return code for a particaular step

Hi All,
can i set the return code for a particular step through jcl.
for eg;
step 1 is IEFBR14
step 2 is some pgm
step 3 is sort

if the return code for step 3 is 0 can i alter it to 4
in job itself.

Can you alter a return-code after the program has already set it?
