Hi all,
Just got a weird doubt in my mind while going through the options while creating a GDG.
The document which I went through said: Noscratch option will uncatalog the dataset when the limit of GDG is reached.
Basically what is the use of Uncataloging the dataset..
Could someone clarify this...
Regards,
Jaya. |

Jaya,
For this firstly you need to understand what SCRATCH/NOSCRATCH is defined for. This Option is used for GDG Limit over condition.
SCRATCH tells you that GDG entry should be deleted physically and uncataloged; when it is removed from the index.
NOSCRATCH tells you that that GDG entry should be uncataloged, not physically deleted; when it is removed from the index.

Hi Priyesh,
Thanks for the reply.
My question was aimed at "what is the use of Uncataloging dataset" irrespective of which option it was used.
Rather I would define it as "dif between deleting a dataset and uncatalog a dataset"
I guess it should be some 'storage space constraint".
Please clarify ..
Regret for inconvenience, if my previous question didn't express my query properly..

Well, I have that bad habit of not understanding the question properly.

UNCATLG of a dataset means it would remain in the storage area, but the Entry pointing to this dataset in system catalog would be removed. So the next time if you want to acces it again, you may need to know the exact Volume and Serial number etc.
DELETE means the dataset will be deleted from the storage area along with Entry removed from System catalog,ofcourse.. So next time when you want to access this dataset, there is no direct way. Only if your SYSTEM ADMIN is taking a HSM Back-up of the datasets, you can re-access it.
Hope I make it clear.
