PTF UK51706 for z/OS DFSORT V1R5 and PTF UK51707 for z/OS DFSORT V1R10 (Nov, 2009) provide important enhancements to DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL for various types of two file join applications (JOINKEYS, JOIN, REFORMAT, JKFROM); date field conversions (Y2x, Y4x, TOJUL, TOGREG, WEEKDAY, DT, DTNS); merge operations (MERGE operator); alternate ddnames for MERGE (MERGEIN); easier migration from other sort products, and more.

For complete details on these new features, see my "User Guide for DFSORT PTFs UK51706 and UK51707" paper (sortugpg.pdf) at:

The Nov, 2009 PTF is now available. Ask your System Programmer to install it (it's free).

See the following which explains how to tell which functional PTF level you have:

ibmmainframes.com/viewtopic.php?t=33389

If you don't have the new PTF, ask your System Programmer to install it (it's free).

Hi,

With all the PTFs & functionalities, DFSORT has become somewhat very close to programming language in terms of data processing.

Could you please let me know if DFSORT is effecient than COBOL in terms of load on the CPU.

Example, If we perform an operation like incrementing the timestamp of a record like in this thread, ibmmainframes.com/viewtopic.php?t=45058&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

With DFSORT & similar logic in COBOL, which would be effecient?

I am not good with benchmarking softwares & COBOL Coding, so pls share ur thoughts.

Thanks,

As always, with performance, it depends. It depends on your system setup, what you're doing, how efficiently your DFSORT job or COBOL job is coded, etc. The only way to find out for sure is to try it yourself for the particular job you're interested in.
